There are noticeable shifts that take place in your body while you are dreaming. Your body responds to the threat by producing more adrenaline, which causes your blood pressure to rise and your heart rate to quicken. It should not come as a surprise that someone with a compromised heart can pass away while they are sleeping given all of this hyperactivity. It’s possible that the strain and the erratic changes that their body is going through will be too much for their heart to handle.
Rapid Eye Movement, also known as REM, is the stage of sleep during which people experience dreaming. Because your eyes move so quickly back and forth under your eyelids, this condition has been given its name. The fourth stage of sleep is known as REM sleep, and it accounts for 15–20 percent of the total time you spend sleeping. When you first go to sleep, it can take anywhere from thirty to ninety minutes before you start having dreams. During a single night, you will go through the four stages of sleep and may enter the REM stage anywhere from four to seven times.
Your blood pressure and heart rate will fluctuate and increase while you are in REM sleep. It may appear as though your body is enduring a great deal of stress, but in reality, the situation is quite the opposite. When you are dreaming in the rapid eye movement (REM) state, your bodies are completely still, and your muscles are completely relaxed. Although you may move around in your bed occasionally throughout the night, when you are in REM sleep, you remain perfectly still. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as “REM Paralysis.”
The mind is just as active during REM sleep as it is when a person is awake. On the other hand, it has a unique chemical composition. The degree of excitability of the cholinergic neurons determines whether or not REM is experienced. When a person is in the dream state, their brain does not contain any noradrenaline or serotonin. Because of these chemicals, the brain is able to carry out tasks, find solutions to problems, and remember information. This is the reason why it is so difficult for you to recall the details of your dreams.
