Carl Gustav Jung Dream Theory Explained

Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1960) is a follower of Sigmund Freud, who was his mentor, and he too believes in the existence of the unconscious. On the other hand, he does not view the unconscious as being animalistic, sexual, or instinctual; rather, he views it as being more spiritual. Jung and Freud eventually fell out of favour with each other due to their divergent interpretations of dreams.

Jung believed that dreams were a means of communicating with one’s unconscious self and becoming familiar with its workings. Dreams are not an attempt to keep your real emotions hidden from your conscious mind; rather, they are a window into your unconscious mind that allows you to explore hidden parts of yourself. They can help the waking self reach wholeness and provide a solution to a problem that you are now dealing with in your waking life.

Jung defines the ego as a person’s idea of who they are and how they present themselves to the outside world. One major tenet of Jung’s theory is that everything can be understood through the lens of a pair of polar opposites, such as male and female, love and hatred, or good and evil. The “counterego,” or what he refers to as the shadow, is therefore something that operates in opposition to the ego. The shadow is symbolic of the parts of oneself that you do not want to accept or acknowledge and therefore reject. The shadow appears more unsophisticated, less cultured, and has a touch of social awkwardness.

Jung placed a significant amount of weight on dreams that featured extraordinarily detailed imagery. He considered them to be manifestations of archetypes, which he defined as deeper unconscious patterns of innate meaning and knowledge. These dream visions help to connect us with the primitive energies of the psyche, the ultimate developmental objective of which is our completeness as humans, a process that Jung refers to as individuation.

The distinction between “large” and “small” dreams was of particular significance to Jung for this reason. The most significant dreams are based on significant archetypal imagery that come from the collective unconscious. On the road to individuation, dreams like these serve as signposts and pointers.

“Not every one of your aspirations should be taken seriously. Even the most basic people are able to differentiate between “little” dreams and “large” dreams, or, to put it another way, “insignificant” and “significant” dreams. When examined more thoroughly, “small” dreams are the nocturnal pieces of fantasy that originate from the subjective and personal world, and the significance of these dreams is restricted to the activities that take place in everyday life. Because their veracity is contingent on the day-to-day alterations in a person’s psychological equilibrium, this type of dream is readily forgotten, and this is the primary reason for this. On the other hand, significant dreams are generally remembered for a lifetime, and they not rarely prove to be the most valuable pearl in the storehouse of psychic experience.
